It’s almost time for Japan’s “flower rafts,” one of the most beautiful parts of sakura season

Even when their brief time comes to a close, the cherry blossoms continue to be breathtakingly beautiful.

When the cherry blossoms are in bloom, most people who want to see the beautiful flowers head to a park, where they can lay down a tarp and stretch out while admiring the view. Alternatively, some outdoorsy individuals like to go off into the mountains in search of naturally growing sakura trees.

벚꽃을 즐길 수 있는 시기가 막바지에 다다르고 있지만, 그 광경은 아직도 놀랄 만큼 아름답다. 벚꽃이 만발하면 많은 사람은 벚꽃의 아름다움을 보기 위해 공원의 그늘막 아래에 누워 벚꽃의 아름다움을 감상한다. 야외 활동을 좋아하는 사람들은 산에서 자연적으로 피는 벚꽃을 감상하기 위해 떠나기도 한다.

But if you have the chance, you also shouldn’t miss seeing cherry blossoms at a river, or, if you want to be old-school, a castle with a moat. Many of Japan’s waterways are lined with cherry trees, and don’t worry if you’re too late to see them in full bloom. 

그러나 만약 기회가 된다면 강 옆에서 벚꽃을 감상하는 것 또한 놓쳐서는 안 될 볼거리이며 혹은 전통적인 방식의 벚꽃 구경을 즐기고 싶다면 성 옆의 해자(성 주위에 둘러 판 못)에서 감상하는 벚꽃구경도 좋은 볼거리이다. 일본의 많은 수로 옆에는 벚꽃이 줄지어 심겨 있으며 벚꽃 개화 시기를 놓치더라도 벚꽃 구경이 가능하다.

 

If you time your riverside cherry blossom viewing just slightly after the peak of sakura season, there’s a whole different way to enjoy them, called hanaikada.

As we talked about last year, hanaikada means “flower raft” and refers to the clusters of cherry blossoms that float along the surface of a body of water after fluttering down from nearby trees. 

수로 옆 벚꽃 구경은 벚꽃이 만개하는 시기 바로 뒤에 가능하며 벚꽃 구경과는 아주 다른 방식으로 벚꽃 구경이 가능하다. 이를 가리켜 '하나이카다'라고 부른다. 이에 대해서는 작년에 이미 다뤘으며, '하나이카다'의 뜻은 '꽃 뗏목'이며 강 옆의 벚나무에서 진 꽃이 물 표면으로 떨어지며 이를 인용하여 '꽃 뗏목'이라고 부른다.

Built in the early 17th century, Hirosaki Castle remains the most iconic symbol of the town of Hirosaki to this day. 

위의 사진은 보행자 도로에 벚꽃이 진 사진이 아니라 아오모리 현 히로사키 성의 해자(성 주위에 둘러 판 못)에 벚꽃이 물 표면에 떠 있는 사진이다. 17세기에 지어진 히로사키 성은 현재까지 도시를 상징하고 있다.

It’s also one of the most popular cherry blossom viewing destinations in the country, as both its perimeter and interior grounds are covered with cherry trees.

While most sakura are a delicate pale pink in color, some of them are also white, as can be seen in these two photos of hanaikada at Hirosaki Castle.

또한, 히로사키 성은 그 주위와 내부 모두 벚꽃으로 둘러싸여 있어 일본에서 벚꽃 감상에 가장 유명한 지역이다. 위의 사진에서 볼 수 있듯이 대부분의 벚꽃은 은은한 옅은 분홍색을 띠며 일부는 흰색을 띤다.

If you’re looking at these pictures and kicking yourself for not planning a trip to Aomori this weekend, don’t kick too hard, because these photos were taken last year. Due to its northern location, Aomori’s sakura bloom later than their Tokyo-area counterparts, and with the cherry blossoms still approaching their peak in the capital, you’ve got a few weeks yet until the petals start falling en masse into the Hirosaki moat.

만약 이 사진을 보면서 이번 주에 아오모리 지역으로 벚꽃 구경을 가지 못한 것을 후회한다면 위의 사진은 작년에 찍힌 사진이기 때문에 그럴 필요는 없다. 북쪽 지역에 있는 아오모리 지역의 특성 때문에 도쿄 지역보다 좀 더 늦게 개화한다. 도쿄 지역의 벚꽃이 절정을 향해 다가가고 있으므로 히로사키 해자를 메운 떨어진 벚꽃 잎들을 보기 위해서는 몇 주 더 시간이 있다.

On the other hand, it’s probably not a good idea to wait too long if you’d like to see the hanaikada at Tokyo’s Megurogawa River… or Yokohama’s Okagawa River. These pictures, also from a year ago, show they’re no slouches either.

반면 도쿄의 메구로가와 강과 요코하마의 오카가와 강의 '꽃 뗏목'을 보고싶다면 너무 지체하지 마시길. 위의 사진들 역시 작년에 찍힌 사진들로 '꽃 뗏목' 구경을 해보시길.

As always though, the sakura are fickle things as far as when they’ll bloom and how long they’ll stick around. But there are sure to be plenty of gorgeous photos online of hanaikada over the weeks to come, and even if you miss out on seeing the phenomenon in person, there’s always next year.
